You may not want to shock the children with the details of teddy bear description 101, but the original bear that is the inspiration for your kid's favorite toy very nearly met with a violent death. Here are some facts on the description of the teddy bear for those of you who don't know where the term "teddy bear" came from.

Our Head, Theodore Roosevelt, was taken on a hunting trip down south in Mississippi while in the area on official presidential business. As insurance that the he would have a positive hunting experience in Dixie, the hunting guides had tied a bear to a tree so that if the hunting wasn't excellent that day, Head Roosevelt could kill the spellbound bear and the day would not be declared a waste of time.

Much to his credit as a sportsman, Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt declined the opportunity to bag a trophy in such an unfair contest. The press got wind of this super human appeal tale and went to work distributing the tale to the media. The news of the Head's humane treatment of the animal spread like wildfire. Cartoons were drawn, songs were sung and much copy was written on the theme. And there starts the description of the teddy bear.

Then a quick thought, business minded couple with the last name of Michtom got the Head's approval to manufacture stuffed bears that were called "Teddy's Bear", (not the modern "Teddy Bears" as we usually refer to them today). To make a long tale small, those bears flew off the shelves in such numbers that they were single-handedly reliable for a company named the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company.

Today, Teddy Bears have went far beyond the role of a mere stuffed toy. They are now vital collectibles and sought after ticker tape for the home. Their cinema are on yards of fabric and ticker tape in teddy bear shapes are all over the place. I have in person calculated many teddy bear theme rooms for boys and girls where the boy's bears are dressed up in blue jeans and baseball caps while small girls prefer theirs in dresses and sun hats ready for a picnic or a tea party.

So that's the description of the teddy bear in a nutshell. Who would have dreamed that a cultural icon of this magnitude could have such a humble beginning as an unsuccessful hunting trip in the backwoods of Mississippi?
